Reunion Week
It’s reunion week. Shan’s Auntie Sherrill and Uncle Alf are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary so the family is in town.
50 years is a long time. I don’t even know how long 50 years is because I haven’t lived 50 years. Sometimes it feels like I may not make it to 50, that is how long 50 years is. Now imagine being married for 50 years. I have been married for 5 years and that is closest thing I have to what 50 years might feel like. Don’t get me wrong, I love my wife, but married life isn’t easy. You wouldn’t know that though after spending a week with Sherrill and Alf.
There is something infectious about those two and whatever it is they have found it in each other. It has also rubbed off on the rest of their family as well. I saw this same energy in Deb who also stayed with us for a couple of days this week as well. Each time they come, it feels like they have never left. It’s just that comfortable.
Friday was the reunion and my first introduction to Carol, Tom, and Cam. It was also my first introduction to Brian and Paula who I heard so much about after Shan’s trip to Ottawa. She was right about how much I would love these two. She told me that Brian and I had a lot in common and shared a very similar sense of humor. It came out that night when we were the only one’s left sitting around discussing RLS, bed fires, unicorns, and the perfect woman.
On Saturday we all met in St. Vital park where Sherrill and Alf renewed their vows after 50 years of marriage. Gerrie did an awesome job in the JP role and the ceremony was flawless. It was truly inspirational to see two people so much in love after all those years. I think everyone was quite touched and I was so happy just to be a part of it.
After the ceremony it was party in park time with family. I thought the bingo was a nice touch to get to know everyone and I just wanted to thank everyone who worked so hard to put this day together. It was so good to see everyone all in one place. In fact by the end of the day I didn’t want to say goodbye to everyone. Originally I had planned on going to the zoo on Sunday but after hanging out with everyone on Saturday I wanted to keep things going on the links.
So Alf and Marvin did some shuffling and made room for a couple of late additions. Big thanks to Deb for her contributions to the golf experience! I had an absolute blast even as a non-golfer (best ball on 16). It was great to watch the real golfers in my group and I may have done better if I wasn’t going beer for beer with Brian. It was hot, but that dude is thirsty. Extra thanks to Alf for the A&W stop on the way home, much appreciated.
I hear the Zoo was brilliant too. Thanks for a great weekend everyone and enjoy your time at the lake!
