5 Year Anniversary

Top Gun

Shan and I celebrated our 5 year anniversary on Friday. She took me to see Top Gun at the Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park. We stopped and picked up a little Chinese Food on the way there (this is where Joel would say…”or as the Chinese call it…wait for it…food”). We also grabbed a Slurpee and some chocolate just to make sure we covered all the bases. One thing I didn’t think about though was how cold it is getting at night these days. Shan was geared up in shoes, socks, jeans, hoodie, as were most people. Me, shorts and a t-shirt. I nearly froze my knackers off.

The movie was awesome. I forgot how cheesy that movie was and it was totally amplified when the crowd laughed in unison to the scene where Tom Cruise is standing around in his tighty whiteys after losing a big dog fight that day. Hilarious.

It wouldn’t be a Winnipeg crowd if there wasn’t a dumb drunk girl causing a small scene. She was heckling all night and tripping over people in the crowd. It reminded us of the Joe Rogan show in Winnipeg where the idiot kept yelling “BRING BACK THE JETS”. I guess that’s how you get things done around here.

Anyway I totally recommend doing this if you get the chance it was wicked fun. Just bundle up. Thanks for a great night and the last 5 years Shan.

Drew’s Visit

Swain

Drew was in town this past weekend and apparently I missed a gong show at the Pal Friday night. To make up for that though I hooked up with the guys on Saturday night for Danielle’s social. Bry, Drew, and Mike, were still going pretty hard considering Drew wasn’t sure how he had gotten home the night before and spent the day in bed thinking he had some kind of brain hemorrhage.

The social was good. Mike won a printer he will never use and I stole enough candy to make my dentist cringe. Puncher also found a sausage in her purse at the end of the night so it goes without saying that people were punched. Mostly me. It was good to get out and see some old friends. Even Mom and Dad Ratte were there!

Big thanks to Shan for taking over Sunday morning.

Bday Weekend

Ratte

Saturday morning I woke up a little bit older. Not as old as I had originally thought because when I told Shan I couldn’t believe I was turning 38 she said “that’s because your only turning 37″. See, I am old, I can barely keep up with these things!

Lexi got me up bright and early Saturday morning and it was like she knew it was my special day because she climbed into bed for a cuddle instead of opening the blinds to tell me the sun is awake. We got up, had breakfast and then I did a little vacuuming in my underwear (visual). Just as I finish up the door opens up and the Ratte’s pile in! I had no idea they were coming but it was the best surprise ever. The kids had so much fun playing and we just sat and talked over breakfast. This is what I want every Saturday to be like!

Al took me out for lunch at Lovey’s and then I motored back home to get ready for Dusty and Simon’s Winnipeg Wedding. They eloped in Vegas so Pat and Carla had a little party in the back yard so that we could celebrate with them. It was a great day for it.

We returned home pretty early and Shan gave me the “Free Pass” to go see Captain America. I put on my Captain America Cologne and met Ratte and Tyler at the theater. It was a good 3D movie but I wasn’t blown away. Can hardly wait for Avengers now though.

Sunday morning Shan and I drove out to Lee River to see JD and Linda’s new place. They downsized a bit because they bought a 5th Wheel and will be traveling more than they are home now. They have spent the last couple of HOT months fixing it up and it looks amazing compared to the last time we were there. I was amazed at all the work they have done in a short time.

Shan and the girls are out there for a couple of days and last night I went to bed and late and slept in until about 9:30am this morning. I miss them all but…best gift ever.

Taco Time

Ratte

Shan and I had a mall lunch the other day and I found myself inspired to write a little letter to Taco Time Canada.

Taco Time,

I am not exactly sure why I am so motivated to write, I wasn’t really wronged in any way. I think I just felt like saying a lot more and was really put off by the person I was dealing with that day. I enjoy your food when I am in the mall and this is the only time I have ever come away feeling like I hated the place.

I was at the mall with my wife and daughter. My daughter and I were off getting a Booster Juice while my wife picked up your Chicken Burrito. When she got back it was my turn to get some food so I got back in line at your counter. I knew it was my turn when the lady (short hair, older lady) behind the cash register looked up at me and raised her eyebrows, as if to say – you gonna order something or just stand there – perhaps I expected something more like…”Hi there, can I take your order” or something even a little less courteous like “what can I get you?”. The eyebrow raise isn’t all that put me off.

ME: “Hi there, could I get a Large Super Beef Burrito with no Tomato’s and lot’s of sour cream?”
HER: “You want extra sour cream?”
ME: “Does it cost more for extra sour cream?”
HER: “Yup”
ME: “Maybe just a little extra seeing as I am not getting any tomatoes?”
HER: “We can’t sub things like that.”
ME: “Really? Even though you are saving on the tomatoes?”
HER: “Do you want the extra sour cream or not?”
ME: “No, but I will take the tomatoes now. I would rather just pick them off out of principle.”

Now I know this seems really immature on my part, and it is out of character, but I left the counter feeling slighted. Maybe I expected some kind of empathy from the person working there like – “I am really sorry but we just aren’t able to do that” and when I didn’t get it I got the impression that Taco Time Canada has really strict standards when it comes to food costs. Like there was a camera in place counting how many pumps the sour cream gun makes in correlation to how many times “Extra Sour Cream….$0.50″ was entered on the till. It seems like a long way to go to save a little money on sour cream. How much sour cream is a customer worth? I just spent $10 on a Large Super Beef Burrito (minus tomatoes) and a small fountain drink and I can’t get a little token sour cream to help it down? When I spend $10 on a sub from Subway they don’t charge me for extra mayo. The guy doesn’t roll his eyes at me when I ask for a few extra pickles. In fact the last time I was there with my daughter I bought a 6″ ham sub with no veggies or sauces (she is 2 and doesn’t like all that stuff yet) and because it was the manager making it he gave me a discount. I don’t ever expect that to happen again, or for regular staff to take liberties like that but I was super impressed.

Can someone enlighten me if this is a food cost issue, or just poor customer service…or both?

I know this seems silly that someone would take the time to complain about something like this but as a proud supporter of your product it really left a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t think my will power will keep me away from your food, maybe just that location.

Jets Last Game In Winnipeg…or was it?

Got a sweet Jets hoodie from Tyler and Mandy. I will be sure to wear it when I watch the games on TV this season. Made me think of the old White Outs and where they originated.
